Playing Favorites

I'm shameless in how much I love Norman - she is absolutely our favorite goat. Pleasant temperament, size an all around pleasure to be with - when I'm sad she lets me hold her around the neck and nuzzles me! She quietly had two beautiful bucks this morning - they are already driving her crazy crawling all over her and nursing for long periods of time. For now they are Buck C (darker colored one) and Buck D (light one - little rascal was born breech ). I am wallowing in the joy of two healthy babies with a mama who to all appearances loves taking care of her babies. Yes Lanny - they smell incredible and are so soft I'm getting a weird rash on my neck from nuzzling them! ah - new life - it is special - here on Buhlaland - Norman's Queen for a Day today!

Sharilyn - DH and I were "mentors" for first grade boys a few years ago. We decided to have the boys name a goat - giving them an activity and spelling lesson all that. DH's little guy looked at the picture and said - "her name is Norman" - DH gently suggested "Norman is a boy name - she is a girl" - little boy shrugged and said "she don't know the difference" so Norman she is.

They are so CUTE!!! They look so soft and I bet they smell even greater! I love baby anythings! You got a bunch of little bucks so far, right? Hope you get some females, too!

We had a Norman the Doorman (sheep style and male) he had the most hilarious baa and always stood at the door of course.

Do you wish you were having more girls, if you have doelings do you sell them? Do you get a pretty good price for the doelings in your market of is the market better for the fellas?

We are hoping for more females - we usually will keep little does but don't have a use for more bucks. We'll have to decide soon whether to wether all the bucks so they can stay with the herd until they go to the dreaded "trip to town" (they don't dread it - I do - hate taking them to slaughter but nothing else to do with them). Lanny - right now there isn't much market for goats - everyone decided goats were such a good idea so more meat than the market needs. I'm not a milker so the livestock dilemma - which to keep and which to go. But this week I'm just enjoying their beautiful newness - I'll Scarlett O'Hara everything else (worry about that tomorrow)

Hi Dani - I'd love to sell the bucks - there is a glut of goats around here now and just like my herd - most herds have far more bucks thans does. I can occasionally place one in a different herd (you shouldn't breed off a brother or son to your current does) but most likely the little guys will live it up with us for 5 months or so and then make the trip into town. We neuter them so they can stay with their mamas - so they get to stay with mama and eat all they want and play like crazy. The thing with male goats (even neutered ones) is they grow up, aren't all that cute and often are aggressive even if not "potent".
