Tabula Rasa

Y'all are no doubt already impressed and intrigued - the gal from Texas getting all fancy on you by using a latin phrase for a blog title. Fancy term to indicate I'm being gifted with a nearly blank slate in our garden

Yesterday DH and a young friend of ours began the process of cleaning up our side garden. Planning a total renovation of the garden area. Economics is part of it - prices at grocery store and even local produce markets continue to climb. We'll be putting in some basics for ourselves - plants of tomato, peppers, cucumbers, squash and whatever else looks viable. Went to container gardens because our previous gardener (ahem - yes that would be ME) wouldn't weed on a daily basis and our in the ground garden became a struggle. SO containers it is. The little dog house looking structure is actually a well house - our water well pump is in there. Yes it is far too close to the house but we didn't think of everything when we were planning our home - obviously.

Still have a couple of crape myrtle bushes, a peace rose and currently a container of strawberries which is about to become two hanging baskets of strawberries - snails and slugs are taking harvest.

Plenty more to come as far as
garden renovation possibly a water feature and garden sculpture- big excitement on Buhlaland - springtime, gardening, projects - woo hoo that is all good.

UPDATE: Ok the black containers are water tanks for livestock - we got ours at Tractor Supply

Good luck with your garden, Linda Sue! Hope that helps out with your grocery bill. I think mine does, too, especially in the summertime! Lookin' good!

It all looks great! The container garden should prove to be a bit easier to tend.

Argh slugs - must we mention them? The bane of a happy existence, though I do get cheap thrills slicing them in half with my scissors. The ducks are taking adequate care of them at the moment but Daffy and his gang walk all over things, some can handle it some, like asparagus, can not. But in June when the strawberries are on I will have to either talk myself into liking green berries or lock up the ducks, but then I'll have to talk myself into liking half eaten berries. Argh, slugs!

Linda Sue, I love your idea for a raised garden. I don't have a big yard and I want to do something that doesn't require tilling. Those big black containers look great. What are they, where are they, and how much are they? Thanks ever so much for the help.

Your garden area looks great, Linda Sue... I'm beginning to think the container garden is the way to go because you can put it close to the house~ close enough the deer won't come near it!

Best wishes; it all sounds/looks great. I love this time of the year and it sounds like you do too. Wishing you both a blessed weekend.

I was wondering what the black containers are, too!!! Everything of mine is in containers. First of all, we only have sand here, and no matter what I put in the earth, in a year, it's still sand. Second, I raises things to where I don't have to bend so far. And third, I hate weeding. I did run into problems with the grass and weeds around my pots, so I put down that black stuff you see at nurserys. Perfect. I'm already picking beans, ate my greens and beets and spinach, and cucumbers are flowering. Can't wait to see how yours does. Those are the greatest of all containers!!!!

You are busy and looks to be productively busy! Your weather is much more conducive to growing abundantly than ours, longer days or warm sunshine and your container gardens should be easier to keep watered. You are so right about grocery prices. Given that, many of us should be willing to re-think and use our yard spaces to grow our own produce.

Looks to be an exciting spring and summer for Buhl-a-land!

Been trying to get Rick to plant in containers and never thought of waterers. We're ground planters and have two gardens this year. We've had so little rain and I'm having to water my onions and garlic. Chance of rain today. Keep us posted on your garden. It will be interesting to see how well it produces.
